Engraved image of Major General Henry Halleck by Edward Anthony. The portrait was taken at Brady's studio at 501 Broadway, New York, New York. Halleck was an officer during the Mexican war, then resigned his commission to practice law. He received a commission again at the outbreak of the Civil War. Halleck took charge of a department in the western theater and performed well. In July of 1862 he was appointed General in Chief of the Union Armies. He held that position until March 1864, when he was replaced by Lieutenant General Grant. The CDV has a very slight bend on the lower left corner. The back has pencil markings only, probably vendor inventory.
