Confederate Pass

A unique and rare piece of Confederate history, this is a pass issued by the Provost Marshall of the Department of East Tennessee. These were required in order for civilians and soldiers alike to move freely through the area. The pass was printed by Haws and Dunkerly of Knoxville for use during 1863. The signature of the Provost Marshall at that time was John E Toole, who began the war as a Captain in the 39th Tennessee Infantry. The rest of the period ink I am not able to make out. This would make a great addition to your Confederate document collection!
