Model 1851 New York Militia sword belt plate on a leather belt. The plate measures 3' wide and 1 3/4" tall. The plate has a very eye pleasing patina with old English script lettering surrounded by a laurel wreath. Examples of the plate can be seen in both O'Donnel and Campbell's "American Military Belt Plates" plate 667, and Kerksis' book "Plates and Buckles of the American Military 1795-1874"plate 116. These were the more common cast brass plates that were issued to NCO's and enlisted men that wore swords. The leather belt is pretty tired and broken in two near the keeper. That being said, it still shows quite well when displayed laid flat.
