Antique brass gun capper of unknown manufacture. The idea behind the production of these cappers was to help reduce dropping of caps during weapons reloading under battlefield conditions. A very similar example of this capper is found in Francis Lord's book "Civil War Collectors Encyclopedia" on page 118. It operates on the same principle as the Colt percussion Paterson capper. the capper is 2 3/4" in length by 2" in width. The mechanism that retains the caps under spring tension is fully functional. This one is for use with pistols utilizing the caps made for Colt type revolvers. The eyelet for a lanyard, or "dummy cord", is present. This little puppy will compliment your antique firearms or ammunition collection!
