The Womans Relief Corps was adopted as an auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic in 1883. These medals were presented to members of the WRC. The medal is 3" tall, with the broach being 1 1/2' wide. The broach has the letters FCL, standing for fraternity, charity and loyalty. The red white and blue ribbon shows wear from use, but is still in very good condition. The Maltese cross has Womans Relief Corps 1883 stamped on the outer panels. In the center are five figures, two American flags and an eagle. The figures are of the Goddess of Liberty, a soldier, a boy, a woman and a child. The back of the cross is marked PATENTED MAY 4 AND SEPT 23 1886. This example will make a fine addition to your GAR collection.
