This is an ivory handled, spear point knife made in the 1870's - 1890's. The knife has an overall length of 17 1/2", with a blade length of 12 3/16". The handle is made of ivory and has attained a nice yellowish patina from age. Unfortunately the handle is cracked from the cross guard all the way to the pommel cap on one side. This piece was picked up in Colorado on the way to a show in Denver a couple years ago. The steel blade is tapered, measuring 2" at the cross guard and tapering down to a sharp spear point. The double edged blade carries a pretty decent edge on either side. There are no nicks on either side of the sharpened edges. The turned ivory handle is retained by a brass pommel cap. The simple blade has a very pronounced median ridge. I can see this one being used to skin and butcher elk, or maybe fend off the occasional big grizzer bear! This is most certainly a mountain man style sticker and would go well in that type of display or collection, especially paired with a .50 caliber Hawkins!
