This is a Dutch Model 1871 cruciform bayonet from the late 1870's - 1890's period. This bayonet was designed to be used with the Model 1871 series of Beaumont rifles. The Model 1871 was first introduced in 1871 with a one piece iron locking ring. In 1875 the Dutch War Department changed to the two piece locking ring made of steel. The one piece locking ring is referred to as the 1st pattern, the two piece locking ring is known as the 2nd pattern. This original condition bayonet measures 23 1/4" overall, with a blade length of 20 3/16". The four point blade is in unaltered condition. The left side of the shank is stamped with a crown over the letter D and possibly the number 1. The left side of the socket is stamped 498 followed by the letter A. The overall appearance of the bayonet is a dark plum and rust brown patina with just traces of the bright finish showing here and there. The two piece locking ring is complete and functional. The bayonet has light surface rust along the entire length. If you have a Beaumont rifle and need a bayonet, this one should clean up well!
