Model 1854 Austrian Lorenz Socket Bayonet

This is an imported Model 1854 bayonet for the Austrian Lorenz .54 caliber musket. These weapons were used by both the Northern and Southern armies during the Civil War. The bayonet has an overall length of 22 1/4", with the blade measuring 18 3/4" and the socket 3 1/8". The socket has attained a brown patina, while the blade shows the original bright finish mixed with scattered pitting and a few areas of very light surface rust. The left shank has a depressed asterisk stamped on it, seems most do. The back edge of the socket is stamped 55. The locking ring is present, but frozen in position. A little oil and some elbow grease will probably correct that problem. This is a good example of an imported Civil War era bayonet.
