The Ancient & Honorable Artillery Company of Boston, Massachusetts is the oldest chartered military organization in North America, the 3rd oldest in the world. It was charted in 1638 as a volunteer militia company to train officers enrolled in the militia across Massachusetts. Many of the original members of the AHAC had been members of the Honourable Artillery Company of London. The traditions of the London Artillery Company were observed for years, but eventually grew distant. Relations between the two were broken off after the War of 1812. In 1851 members of the AHAC visited the Great Exhibition in London, and the two branches renewed contacts. In 1903 the Honourable Artillery Company of London visited their counterparts in America. The two artillery companies met in Crescent Park, Providence, Rhode Island on 3 October, 1903. The Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Boston is still active today, with approximately 550 members. This badge was for members of the AHAC and the HAC of London who attend that function back in 1903. The badge is 2 5/8" tall, with the hanger being 1 3/4" wide. The hanger is a spread winged eagle. Suspended below the hanger is a blue ribbon. Suspended from the ribbon is a 12 point star shaped emblem with a raised circle in the center. There are three old English script letters in the space around the circle, along with the date 1818. The logo of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company is in the center of the raised circle. This medal is in overall very good condition. The ribbon is not stained or frayed, it has no damage at all. The header badge and medallion have a matching bronze patina and display well. The back of the header is no stamped with a maker mark. The reverse of the medallion is stamped "ANCIENT AND HONORABLE/ARTILLERY COMPANY/-OF-/MASSACHUSETTS/-AND-/HONOURABLE ARTILLERY/COMPANY OF LONDON/OCTOBER 3rd/-1903-/CRESCENT PARK/PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, U.S.A. This AHAC badge has some great eye appeal, and would look great in any Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company display.
