This is an Austrian Model 1861 Infantry Officer's Saber of unknown manufacture. It measures 34 7/8" overall with a 29 1/4" slightly curved blade. There is a wide stopped fuller that runs from the ricasso 19 1/2" long. The blade is nickel plated and still has quite a bit of shine to it. Etched on both sides of the blade in a floral motif is a crown over the letter H. The only visible inspector stamp or makers mark is on the obverse ricasso, a capital I. The edge of the blade has been sharpened from the tip about 20" back along the bottom edge and 3 1/2" along the top. The brass guard, knucklebow, backstrap and ferrule have an even, light chocolate aged patina. There are no inspectors stamps or any other markings anywhere on the hilt. The wooden grip is marine skin covered, remains tight to the grip and shows light wear from usage. The twisted copper wire is unbroken and is tight on the grip. The iron scabbard is in very good condition. This one has one suspension ring and mount. Just below the throat a unit identification has been engraved and it reads 2.R.R.6.2, but I don't know what that represents. The drag is stamped with the same letter I as found on the ricasso on the inward side. Also stamped above the letter I is what looks like a script letter L and the number 37. The body of the scabbard has a nice steel gray patina, with plenty of little dents and dings from use. These swords were used by the Austrian all the way through World War I. This one is probably a veteran bring back from either WWI or WWII. It displays well, and would look great in your WWI Imperial German collection.
