This is a Grand Army of the Republic grave marker made by the Trenton Emblem Company of Trenton, New Jersey. These markers had a two fold purpose, to identify a grave of a Union soldier from the Civil War, and also to hold a small American flag on Decoration Day. Later on that day would be called Memorial Day. This GAR marker is made of bronze and has a weathered, aged patina to it. It looks like it has been hit by a lawn mower, being bent and has a couple of shallow v shaped notches in the edges. The front of the marker is made like a five point star, and each branch of the Union is represented in the points, to include the navy. In the center of the star is a circular area with the letters GAR and the dates 1861/1865. The back of the marker is marked TRENTON EMBLEM CO. in an arc above TRENTON N.J. The Trenton Emblem company made metal grave markers from 1919 to 1938. While it may be a little bent out of shape, this one has some fantastic eye appeal.
