This is a British railway lantern made by Sherwood Limited of Birmingham, England in the 1900's. It stands 7 1/4"" tall and is 4 3/4" wide at the widest point. The lantern housing is tin that has been painted black. It retains the original brass and porcelain burner with wick, adjustment arm and tin fuel tank. There are two small 1 1/2" round clear pieces of glass, one on each side of the lantern. A larger 3" red piece of glass is in the front of the lantern. All three pieces of glass are in very good condition with no cracks, chips or hazing. There is a bracket on the back of the housing that would have allowed the conductor or brake man to slide the lantern onto a post. A bolt with jam nut held the lantern in place when mounted. The front of the lantern is stamped E crown R/9-1955/S.N.L.W. Ltd on the rounded part of the housing. The wick advance arm knob is stamped SHERWOOD LTD BHAM. The wick feed still rotates freely, and a never used wick is installed in the burner. I believe this British railway lantern dates from the mid 20th century, and would make a nice addition to any railroad collection.
