This is an East German Medal for "Faithful Fulfillment of Duties in the Civil Defense of the GDR" awarded during the Cold War period. This medal was established on 25 October, 1977 and was awarded in three different classes. The first award was for 10 years service, the ribbon is crimson with a single red stripe, the medal was bronze. The second award was for 20 years service and had a white stripe on the ribbon and a silver medal. The third award was for 30 years service and had a yellow strip and a gold medal. This medal is for the 30 years of service, and includes the small ribbon as well as the medal itself. It's a pretty neat little piece of history from the Cold War days.
