This is a group of five Grand Army of the Republic souvenirs related to Linn County, Kansas. Included in the group is a 125th Anniversary badge for the Battle of Mine Creek, a centennial badge for the Marais des Cygnes Massacre, a GAR hat badge, miniature GAR stick pin and a Sons of Veterans Auxiliary membership medal. The Battle of Mine Creek took place on 25 October, 1864 in Linn County, Kansas. It is the only battle fought on Kansas soil between Union and Confederate soldiers, not guerilla forces. It was one of the largest cavalry battles fought during the civil war, and was a Union victory. The Marais des Cygnes massacre also took place in Linn County, Kansas on 19 May, 1858. Missouri border guerillas raided the village of Trading Post, Kansas and captured 11 "free state" men. They marched them into a ravine and opened fire on them, killing five, wounding five and one managing to escape unharmed. John Brown of Harper's Ferry fame built a stone fort neat the site in June of 1858. The GAR hat badge and miniature stick pin are typical of the late 1800's. The Sons of Union Veterans Auxiliary membership badge is of the 1883 design. All five pieces are in very good condition and display well. They come in a red lined riker case and display well together.
