WWI British Pattern 1907 Bayonet

This is a British Pattern 1907 bayonet manufactured by the Wilkinson Sword Company during World War I. The bayonet was produced as a replacement for the Pattern 1903 bayonet used with the Long Magazine Lee/Enfield rifle. The P1903 bayonet had a blade length of 12" and considered to be to short for the new Short magazine Lee/Enfield rifle. This P1907 bayonet has an overall length of 21 7/8", with a blade length of 17 1/8". The blade shows no bluing remaining, the blade has a dull steel patina. The blade has been sharpened at some point long ago, and still holds an edge. The reverse side of the blade with the crown over GR/1907/WSC and has the number 4 and 18 stamped to indicate when it was manufactured, April, 1918. The obverse side is stamped with the British government acceptance stamp of a broad arrow, an inspector stamp of a crown over two illegible letters and an X for the bending proof. The handle has a steel cross guard with attachment point to fit the British SMLE Mark III rifle. The walnut grips are retained by two screws. The grips show wear from normal handling, but are not abused. The bird head pommel and cross guard have a some bluing remaining, the rest is a dark steel gray patina. The spring type release works fine and this bayonet will properly secure to a Mark III rifle. The bayonet does not come with a scabbard. If you have a WWI collection, especially British, this Pattern 1907 bayonet will make a nice addition.
