This is a Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic membership badge. The Ladies of the GAR is a Congressionally chartered non profit organization, and is the oldest women's hereditary organization in the United States. It was founded in 1886 and continues today. This badge consists of a header, ribbon and medallion. The header has a beautiful chocolate brown patina and is not back marked. It consists of a spread winged eagle over crossed cannons. Clutched in the eagle's talons is a saber, and cannon balls are stacked below the cannon tubes. The ribbon is made like an American flag and still has a nice bright appearance. The ribbon does have some fraying along the edges. The medallion itself is not back marked. It is made in the fashion of the Grand Army of the Republic medallion, with the main difference being the words LADIES OF THE GRND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC and the year 1886 surrounding the five figures in the center of the medal. This one is in good condition and would make a nice addition to any Ladies of the GAR collection.
