Late 1800's Leather Equipment Sling

This is a US military leather equipment sling from the late 1800's. The sling measures 1 1/8" wide and is approximately 43" in length. The black bridle leather is in very good condition and is still very supple. Originally I thought this was a sling for the Model 1878 canteen used during the Indian Wars and the Spanish American War period. It's about 9 inches short for that, and does not have the hooks to fasten to the triangular hangers. The sling does have two rounded brass adjustment hooks, dating it to post civil war. If you collect Indian Wars or Spanish American War eras, I'm sure you can find a use for this!
