This is a riker case with 23 Spanish American War or Philippine Insurrection patriotic buttons or pins from the 1890's. The Spanish American War buttons depict the USS Maine under full steam, with the words REMEMBER THE MAINE in an arc above the ship. The Maine exploded in Havana harbor, resulting in the United States entering the Spanish American War. The buttons are 1 1/4" across and are made by J. Floersheim, Kunstadter & Company of Chicago, Illinois. The colors on the buttons are still very vibrant, with no chips or degradation. There are four buttons of the Maine in three different variations, one of the Cruiser Brooklyn and one showing the defeat of the Spanish fleet in Havana Harbor. There are two Admiral Dewey buttons, a General Fitzhugh Lee button and two Brigadier General Funston buttons. All buttons have the same appearance and the pins are all present. The Brigadier General Frederick Funston buttons have an image of him as a Colonel of Volunteers during the Philippine Insurrection. The perimeter of the button is painted red, white in blue in the form of a US flag. In an arc around Funston are the words BRIG. GEN. F. FUNSTON HERO 20th KAN. VOL. Frederick Funston was appointed the Colonel of the 20th Kansas Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Shortly afterwards the regiment was shipped to the Philippines, and on 4 February, 1899 the Philippine Insurrection broke out. Funston would be awarded the Medal of Honor and received a promotion to Brigadier General of Volunteers. Funston went on to make a career of the Army, attaining the rank of Major General. He died of a heart attack on 19 February, 1917 at the age of 51. Had he not died, Funston would have been made the commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force during World War I. In addition to the pinbacks there are three tin Uncle Sam marching off to war pinbacks, one USWV lapel pin, one 22nd Kansas Volunteer Infantry Regiment lapel pin, four celluloid pinbacks with the American flag and or the Cuban flag, a lapel pin Cuban flag, and a small American flag with Avenge the MAINE printed on it. All 23 buttons or pins are in very good condition and will go a long way in brightening up your Span Am/Philippine collection.
