This is a lapel pin of Commodore Winfield Scott Schley from the Spanish American War period. Schley had a remarkable military career that spanned the Civil War through the Spanish American War period, serving from 1860 to 1901. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1860 and was appointed a midshipman on board the frigate Niagara. The ship operated near China and Japan, and upon it's return to the United States in 1861 the American Civil War was underway. Schley was made Master and served on various ships of the Western Gulf Squadron. Before the Civil War ended Lieutenant Schley was assigned to the Pacific Squadron, and suppressed a Chinese workers insurrection in the Chincha Islands. He served as an instructor at the US Naval Academy, in Europe and the Coast of Africa, inspector of the Second Lighthouse District and a myriad of other assignments before the Spanish American War. During the Spanish American War newly promoted Commodore Schley was given command of the Flying Squadron, using the armored cruiser Brooklyn as his flagship. The commodore gained fame as "The Hero of Santiago", where his squadron destroyed the Spanish fleet. This colored pin is 7/8" across and remains in very good condition. The pin is manufactured by Whitehead & Hoag of Newark, New Jersey. It has a paper label with the Whitehead & Hoag markings. This will display well on it's own, or will add a small splash of color to you Spanish American War collection.
