This is a Civil War Snare Drum made by an unknown manufacturer. This snare drum is 11" tall and 15 1/2" across the head. This one has a brass body with wooden hoops. The original top head is still on the drum and has no damage. The bottom head is damaged, but still on the drum. The brass body of the drum has a muted golden patina and is in very good condition. I suspect this one has been cleaned some time ago and is slowly aging back. There are no repairs that have been performed on the body of the drum. The original bent wooden hoops are still present and in good condition. They are dark blue on the inside and outside. The tension rope appears to be original to the drum, along with the leather tugs. The air vent is not decorated, as the tensioner for the snare is located over it. There is no makers label on the inside of the drum, and this one has verbal provenance of being French manufactured and Confederate used. There is no documentation to support that though. The leather sling is also reported to be French made, and used for carrying of a Civil War snare drum. The black leather two piece strap remains in very good condition. The length of the sling is 21 1/2", with the widest section of the strap measuring 3 3/4" across. The two pieces of leather are sewn together at the back and have individual loops sewn on the other end for a brass ring. An iron snap hook on the tension rope of the drum attaches to the ring. A brass stick carriage buckle is attached to the right side of the sling to carry the sticks. The brass capped Rosewood sticks measure 16" in length. There is no makers stamp or any other mark to identify this sling or it's maker. If you have a Civil War musical collection, this piece will really help set it off!
