71st National GAR Encampment Commander in Chief Candidate Badge

This is a Commander in Chief candidate's badge from the state of California for the 71st National Grand Army of the Republic Encampment held 5-10 September, 1937 in Madison, Wisconsin. The badge is made up of a celluloid badge and a white ribbon with blue lettering. The white has a likeness of GAR Commander in Chief candidate Overton H. Mennet on the front, with the words COMRADE OVERTON H. MENNET G.A.R. in an arc surrounding his image. The ribbon is printed with CALIFORNIA'S/CANDIDATE/for/COMMANDER-/IN-CHIEF/71st NATIONAL/ENCAMPMENT/G.A.R./1937 in blue ink. Mennet was a Civil War Veteran, born in Switzerland County, Indiana on 8 March, 1850. He enlisted 15 February, 1865 in Company E, 146th Indiana Infantry Regiment. The 146th was attached to 1st Brigade, 3rd Provisional Division, Army of the Shenandoah. After his discharge Overton Mennet went back to the family farm in Indiana, where he worked as a laborer for his father. He was married on 26 March, 1885 to Mary Haper and they had three children together. Mennet became a doctor and settled down in Los Angeles, California. He remained very active in the GAR and was elected as their Commander in Chief, serving in that capacity from 1937 to 1938. Overton Mennet lived to the age of 90, passing away on 25 January, 1941.
