This is the medal portion of a Spanish American War Campaign Medal awarded members of the United States Marine Corps during that time period. The blue and yellow ribbon is missing, but the medallion still has some great eye appeal. This medal was awarded to all Marines who served at sea in the theater of operations or who were in Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam or the Philippines between 1 May, 1898 and 16 August, 1898. The front side of the medal has a typical Spanish coastal fortification, possibly meant to represent Havana's Morro Castle. below the cast is a stack of cannonballs. The words SPANISH CAMPAIGN are in raised letter in an arc at the top of the medal and the date 1898 is at the bottom. The back of the medal has a spread winged eagle perched on an anchor in the center. UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS is in raised letters above the eagle and FOR SERVICE is below the eagle. Oak leaves, the symbol for strength, are on the bottom left of the medal while olive leaves, symbol for peace, are on the bottom right. Even though the ribbon is missing, this is still a rare piece of Marine Corps history. I'm pretty sure you can probably pick up a reproduction ribbon to make this medal complete. It's a great Span Am piece of history, an even cooler Marine Corps piece!
