This is a representatives badge for the 70th national encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic held 20 - 26 September, 1936 in Washington DC. The badge is made up of a header badge, two medallions and a GAR canteen all suspended from each other. The header badge features a spread winged eagle perched atop crossed cannon tubes with the cannon balls underneath. The header has a golden tint to it, and is very attractive. Suspended below the header is a medallion with the letters GAR in the center, with the GAR medallion below and a banner with the word REPRESENTATIVE above them. It has a slightly darker patina than the header. Suspended from the representative medallion is another medallion with the Lincoln Memorial on the face, with LINCOLN MEMORIAL above and WASHINGTON D.C. below the memorial. This medallion is silver in color. Suspended below the Lincoln Memorial is a canteen with the symbol of the GAR in the center. The badge is back marked The Whitehead & Hoag Co. in an arc over NEWARK, N.J. on all pieces except the canteen. This encampment was a national event, open to all GAR members from across the United States. By this time the GAR membership was down to 4391 active members. The badge is missing the yellow ribbon and the lower medallion that has the bust of Oley Nelson, Commander in Chief of the GAR during this reunion. The canteen has been substituted in it's place, a symbol of comradery and shared hardships between the old veterans. While incomplete, it still displays well.
