This is a side by side 12 gauge shotgun manufactured in Birmingham, England by an unknown manufacturer. The shotgun has an overall length of 37", with barrel lengths of 20 1/4". The barrels, lockplates, trigger guard, and all other hard parts have a matching steel gray patina. The exterior of the barrels have a smooth, steel gray patina with the Damascus steel look. The rib between the barrels is stamped with a name, but I can't make it out. The bores are bright and have no rust, they just need a good cleaning. A small brass bead sight is located 1/4" behind the muzzles on the barrel rib. The bottom of the barrels have several stamps on the flats. The right barrel is stamped with the serial # 927, the letter R and the Birmingham provisional proof for barrels. The rib between the barrels is stamped with the letters GR. The left barrel is stamped identical minus the serial number. The right breech pad is stamped12/C within a diamond, the Birmingham definitive proof for black powder shotguns, the Birmingham viewers mark and 14/1. The left breech pad has the same stamps in addition to CHOKE stamped forward of the diamond and 13/1 at the end. These stamps are the ones used by the Birmingham proof house from 1887 to 1896. The lug for the forehand is stamped with the number 10. The barrel flats on the receiver have the Birmingham viewers mark and the serial number of 927. The lock plates also have a very smooth appearance, with the same simple decorative engravings on each side. The mechanics of both locks function fine. A small inlaid silver oval adorns the bottom of the stock. The oak stock is in good condition, and shows evidence of honest in the wrist area. The wrist is checkered, and shows the wear from considerable handling. A large silver plated oval is inlaid on the right side of the stock. It is engraved "Presented to/JOAQUIN MORALES/DE TEJAS". The forehand is also checkered. It is also stamped with the serial #927. This very attractive coach style shotgun came with verbal history of having been presented to Morales for his service with the Texas Rangers during the mid to late 1800's. There is no documentation to support it, and I have done no research on Morales.
