This is a 2nd Model Maynard carbine manufactured by the Massachusetts Arms Company of Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. There were approximately 20,200 of these .50 caliber carbines produced between 1860 and 1865. The serial number of 23839 is stamped into the rear of the trigger guard tang. That places this carbine near the end of production for the 2nd Model. The gun is in untouched, original condition. The 20" octagon to round barrel has taken on an overall steel gray patina, with some of the original bluing remaining on the octagon shaped breech area. The pinched blade front sight is still attached, as well as the two leaf folding rear sight. The bore could use a good cleaning, but still shows good rifling. It still gages out at .50 caliber. The receiver, lock plate, saddle bar and ring, as well as the butt plate all have the same mottled steel gray patina. The left side of the frame is stamped in four lines "EDWARD MAYNARD/PATENTEE/MAY 27 1851/DEC 6 1859". Stamped on the right side of the frame in three lines are "MANUFACTURED BY/MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALLS". The serial number of 23839 and 1865 are stamped into the trigger guard tang. The mechanics of this little war horse work perfectly. The walnut stock is in good condition. There are the usual bumps and dings from handling, but no major wood loss or cracks. The are two worn but very recognizable rectangle cartouches on the left wrist area of the stock. The 2nd Model Maynard carbine is known as one of the best performing and most accurate of all the cavalry arms used during the Civil War. They were prized by both the Union and Confederate Cavalry, and you should have one in your carbine collection as well!
