This is a reproduction seven button Corporal's dress uniform from the Indian Wars period. The trousers are the Model 1872 design, while the jacket is the Model 1885. It wasn't unusual for the uniforms to be mixed and matched back then. It largely depended on what was available to the soldier at the time. The coat is in good condition, having just a couple of small holes in the front. The dark blue wool material has not faded or degraded in any way. The construction of this dress coat is identical to the Model 1885. The sleeves do not have the balloon flair at the elbows, but are the same width from the shoulder to the cuff. The collar is 1" and shows practically no wear. The collar has no closure hook at the bottom of the collar. The collar is yellow to indicate the Cavalry branch of service. The front of the single breasted coat has 7 General Service buttons, all are back marked WATERBURY CO's/WATERBURY CO. All the buttons have the eagle facing right. Each non functioning cuff has three General Service buttons, all with the same Waterbury back mark. On the back of the coat are four more General Service buttons, back marked Waterbury. There is no interior pocket, or exterior ones for that matter. There are no tags or makers labels anywhere on the coat. The interior of the coat is only partially lined. The sleeves are lined with off white cotton material with no stripes. The epaulets are also yellow, the Cavalry branch of color. All the panel seams are tightly stitched together, and show no signs of hand stitched repairs. The bottom of the coat is machine hemmed. The piping along the front and around the bottom of the coat is Cavalry yellow. The chevrons of a Corporal as well as two service stripes are sewn on each sleeve. They have the gold lace incorporated into them, that practice began in 1885. The sky blue wool trousers date are the Model 1872 type. They are in good condition, but do show some wear. The trousers have a four button fly that have four tin buttons sewn on. The button holes on the placket fly are machine stitched. The front has two pockets and none on the back of the trousers. There are four tin buttons sewn on the waist panel in the front and two in the back for suspenders. The outer seam of each leg has a 1/2" stipe of yellow wool to indicate the rank of Corporal. Together this is an excellent reproduction uniform of an Indian Wars Cavalry Corporal's dress uniform.
