This is a souvenir badge for the 50th National Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic held 28 August - 2 September, 1916 in Kansas City, Missouri. The badge measures 1 3/4" wide and 1" high at the highest point. It has a likeness of Elias Monfort, Commander in Chief of the GAR in 1916, in the center, flanked by the dates 1866 on the left and 1916 on the right. Laurel branches and an eternal flame are above Monfort, while a banner with the inscription 50th NATIONAL GAR ENCAMPMENT is below the likeness. It has a nice overall golden patina. The badge is back marked The Whitehead & Hoag Co. in an arc over NEWARK, N.J. This encampment was a national event, open to all GAR members from across the country. The attendance for the six day event was recorded at 140, 074. The badge is in near mint condition, and would be an excellent addition to any GAR collection.
