This is an early 1900's hatchet that was manufactured in the Alsace region of France by GOLDENBERG Acier Fondu. That translates to the Goldenberg Steel Foundry. This maker of mostly wood working tools was founded in 1835. The head measures 7 1/4" wide and 4 1/4" high along the cutting edge. The eye is oval and the head has a small 3/4" wide 1 1/4" high poll. The Goldenberg touch mark is on the right side of the head. This axe head is in very solid condition, with no scaling or rust present. The wooden haft measures 20 1/2" in length and fits the axe head perfectly. It does have just a little bit of play due to shrinkage of the wood. I do believe that it is the original haft. It displays well and will look good in an early 1900's collection.
