This is a pinback promoting Colonel Albert D. Shaw for Commander in Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic from the late 1880's. The red, white and blue pinback has the likeness of Shaw in the center, with the wording of FOR COMMANDER IN CHIEF in an arc above his bust image and COL. ALBERT D. SHAW, N.Y. in an arc below his image. Shaw was a Civil War Veteran and a politician from New York. He was born in Lyme, New York on 21 December, 1841. He enlisted in June, 1861 in Company A, 35th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment as a Private. The 35th would perform guard and patrolling operations in the Falls Church, Virginia during the winter of 1861/1862. The performed the same duties near Falmouth, Virginia during the spring of 1862. Shaw was promoted to Corporal and saw action with his regiment at the battles of Rappahannock, White Sulphur Springs, Gainesville, Second Bull Run, Chantilly, South Mountain, Antietam and Fredericksburg during 1862. He was discharged with the rest of the regiment in 1863. In 1867 Albert Shaw was commissioned a Colonel was placed in command of the 36th New York Infantry Regiment, a National Guard unit. Colonel Shaw commanded the regiment until 1868, when he resigned his commission to accept an appointment as a US consul to Canada. In 1899 Albert D. Shaw was elected Commander in Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, serving as such from 1899 to 1900. Albert Shaw died 10 February, 1901 at the age of 59.
