This is the Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of the Battle of Westport, Missouri that was presented to reenactors of that battle held on 20-22 October, 1989. This medal was used to represent the battle that was originally fought on 21-23 October, 1864. It is one of sixteen medals that were presented to reenactors that participated in national reenacting events across the country. These events ranged from the Firing on Ft Sumter, Battle of the Ironclads, and most major battles of the Civil War. This medal was made in the tradition of the few medals that were presented during the civil War period. The ribbon is blue, white and yellow. The ribbon is still very vibrant and has no damage. The medallion is circular in shape and has a gold tint to it. The front of the medallion has a spread wing eagle in the center with the words "ETERNAL VIGILANCE IS THE PRICE OF FREEDOM" in an arc at the top and "MY RIGHT MY RESPONSIBILITY" on a banner clutched in the eagle's talons. The reverse of the medallion is stamped "125th ANNIVERSARY BATTLE OF WESTPORT MISSOURI" and in and arc at the bottom the dates 1864 * 1989. These look nice displayed with UCV and GAR items. This one is still in the original package with the cardboard backer.
