US Model 1840 Light Artillery Saber

This is a Model 1840 Light Artillery Saber from the Civil War era. This sword has an overall length of 37 1/4", with a blade length of 32". The steeply swept blade has a steel gray patina, with some of the original bright finish showing here and there. The edge has a couple of nicks, but I don't believe they are from blade to blade action. The reverse ricasso is has no visible stamps. The obverse side is only stamped with JT This is the inspector mark of John or Joseph Hannis John was an arsenal sword inspector for the year 1862 only. Joseph was an inspector from 1838-1862. This sword is most likely an Ames manufactured product made either 1861 or 1862. The original leather washer is still present, but shows plenty of wear. The hilt is made of brass and has a single knucklebow. The quillion is unmarked and has no ornamental engraving, the same is true of the pommel cap. There are traces of the original gilt remaining on the guard and pommel cap. The inspectors initial of JH and WAT are stamped into the pommel cap, along with the number 25. The peen remains undisturbed. The wooden grip is still covered in the original leather, which shows honest wear from everyday use. The double strand brass wire is still tight to the wrap. All the brass has taken on an aged mustard yellow patina. The iron scabbard is in very good condition. It has a smooth, bright silver appearance with streaks in it. I'm not sure what has caused the appearance of this scabbard. The scabbard body is dent free and has very little pitting. The number 11 is stamped into the throat and scabbard on the reverse side. The two iron mounts and suspension rings are in good condition and show moderate wear. The drag is unmarked and also shows moderate wear. Overall this is a good condition example of a Light Artillery Saber used during the Civil War. These swords were more of a traditional item than a combat weapon. If you collect "Red Legs" items this one will do your collection some justice!
