This is a Confederate Pike manufactured at the Augusta Arsenal during the Civil War. In February of 1862 the Governor of Georgia, Joseph Brown, issued a proclamation that first named the "Georgia Pike". In his proclamation, addressed to "the Mechanics of Georgia", Brown states that he already has a considerable number of pikes and knives on hand. However, he desires that another 10,000 of each be made within the next month. An exact number of how may pikes were manufactured is not known, but it was well into the thousands. More were made for the state of Georgia than the other Confederate states combined, yet very few survive today. Thousands were destroyed near the end of the war by Union forces. Many more were destroyed after the war by surplus dealers, burning them and collecting the brass and iron components for scrap metal. This Confederate pike is of the type known to have been produced at the Augusta Arsenal in Georgia. The pike has an overall length of 95 1/2", with the double edged spear point blade measuring 11 1/4" in length. One side of the blade has lost all of the finish, leaving it with a dark brown patina. The opposite side of the blade retains about 60% of the finish, so the blade has a mottled, steel gray and brown patina. The iron cross guard is slightly loose, due to the shrinkage of the staff over time. This pike uses an iron ferrule behind the cross guard. The ferrule and two wrought iron straps retain almost all of the original finish. The staff, measuring 84 1/4" in length is in very good condition. The only shortcoming with this staff is the missing ground cup. These were made of iron and placed on the free end of the staff to prevent it from splintering. There aren't many of these full length Confederate pikes remaining, and this one is in very good condition. If you've got the wall space, this will really add a nice touch to your Southern War Room! This item will require special shipping considerations.
