This is a lithograph of 12 Confederate Generals of the Civil War by John Chester Buttre. Buttre began works as a steel plate engraver in New York in 1841. He became very successful, and was published in many magazines and newspapers. He is credited with 3000 engraved portraits of political and military personalities. In 1881 a three volume work titled "The American Portrait Gallery". This work, copyrighted in 1864 by the publisher Orlando D. Case, shows 12 of the Confederacy's most well known Generals. The work is in an oval format, with a single gray matte, and housed in a simple wooden oval frame. Represented in the lithograph are Lieutenant General Thomas J. Jackson, Major General John C. Breckinridge, Major General Sterling Price, General Robert E. Lee, General Joseph E. Johnston, Lieutenant General G.P.T Beauregard, General Braxton Bragg, Major General Simon b. Buckner, Lieutenant General Leonidas Polk, Major General A. Sidney Johnston, Lieutenant General John C. Pemberton and Lieutenant General James Longstreet. The ranks and names listed are the same as shown on the lithograph. The framed group of Confederate Generals measures 11 1/2" tall and 9 1/2" wide. This lithograph has been transplanted from it's original frame, I suspect because it was water damaged. There is a small area of water staining along the top and right hand edge of the image, but it is does not affect the images. While it may not depict all the South's great Generals, (like Forrest!) it does display well.
