This is an Argentine Model 1898 Artillery machete with matching scabbard and frog. This one is 20 1/4" overall and has a hefty 15" blade. The blade has an overall bright appearance with just a couple of wear spots caused by removing and sheathing the machete in the scabbard. The left side of the blade is stamped WEYERSBERG/KIRSCHBAUM & Co/SOLINGEN. The right side of the blade is stamped with MACHETE DE ART. Mlo ARG. 1898 in an arc over the Argentine Coat of Arms, with the serial number of A2004 below the coat of arms. There are no nicks along the cutting edge, and the edge has never been sharpened. The right side of the blade has a deep fuller that is 10" in length. The spine of the blade has been stamped with the letter A just in front of the cross guard. The aluminum handle is held to the blade tang by three steel pins. The handle is very tight to the blade, no wobble or looseness here. A depressed letter M is stamped on each side of the grip, just forward of the front pin. The steel cross guard has several stamps, the letters RA within an oval (Republica Argentine) at the top of the cross guard on the back side, the letter R on the right side of the guard and the letter G on the bottom of the guard on the front side. These big beefy blades were made to clear brush and small trees and they more than proved worthy of the task. The steel scabbard that accompanies this machete is in good condition. There is some loss of the original finish just below the frog on the front side of the scabbard and on the back side, as well as lower down on the back. The ball shaped tip and throat are stamped with the RA within an oval, just as the cross guard. The frog stud is stamped with the serial number A2004, matching the machete. The green leather frog is in great condition, with all the stitching remaining tight and unbroken. The attaching belt and roller buckle are present. The back of the frog has two stamps, the Argentine Coat of Arms and a rectangle cartouche with three letters inside. Overall, this is a fantastic example of an Argentine Model 1898 Artillery Machete.
