East German Border Guard Visor Cap

This is an East German border guard's visor cap from the Cold War Era. These caps were worn by the Grenztruppen der DDR, whose responsibility it was to man and patrol the eastern end of the Berlin Wall and the borders of East Germany. The 47,000 man force was considered a part of the Nationale Volkesarmee (NVA) until 1971. The cap is made of gray gaberdine, with a wide bright green band used to denote the Grenztruppen. The chinstrap and black visor are made of plastic. The cap is unlined, but does have a wide brown sweatband. Sewn onto the top of the inside of the cap is a diamond shaped piece of clear plastic with 1865/N and NVA/58 impressed in it. The hat size of 58 is a size 7 1/4" by American standards. This cap is in very good condition and would work well in any Cold War display or collection.
