This is a replica Confederate half dollar piece intended for use during the Civil War. When the Confederate Army captured the US mint in New Orleans it was renamed the Confederate States mint. They began to strike their own half dollar pieces, using their own obverse of Lady Liberty seated on a boulder, her right hand supporting the shield of the Union that is inscribed with the word LIBERTY. She hold a pole in her right hand that is topped with a Phrygian cap, the symbol of Freedom and the pursuit of Liberty. The reverse of the coin had a shield topped with a Phrygian cap, surrounded by a wreath. Stamped around the perimeter of the coin was CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA HALF DOL. This coin only has the reverse side stamped, the Lady Liberty side is blank. There were only four of these Confederate half dollars struck, making them extremely valuable. Per haps that explains why this coin only has one side struck, to prevent the possibility of being pass off as an original. What ever the reason, this coin will make a nice display piece for the Civil War reenactor in the family.
