This is a fuse pouch for a Hotchkiss gun made during the 1890's. It is constructed of russet brown leather and still has it's original shoulder strap. The front of the box is embossed with a US within an oval. Not sure of the reason, but someone has obliterated the US stamp, but not well enough to completely conceal it. The front flap is secured by a brass finial. The closure tab is strong and unbroken. The shoulder strap is securely riveted to the back of the box. It is adjustable in length by using a square brass buckle. The leather of the box and strap is still very pliable and free from crazing. The wooden fuse block has been removed from the box. On the front of the box near the top is the stamp F.H.R. I'm not certain if this is a makers stamp, inspectors stamp or some young sailors stamp! During the Spanish American War period US Navy ships were equipped with the 3" Hotchkiss gun, some single barrel and some were five barrel revolving cannons. Most were in 40 caliber, but 42, 45 and 50 caliber were also used. This is very scarce piece of naval equipment that was used during the Spanish American War and right on up through WWII.
