This is a Decker style pack saddle for miniature burros/donkeys from the early 1900's. The Decker type pack saddle differs from the more traditional Sawbuck due to the steel hoops versus the wooden crossbucks of the Sawbuck. The Decker brothers, miners in Idaho, needed something stronger than the Sawbuck pack saddle to pack rails back into the mines for the ore cars. They approached a local saddle maker named Robinett to replace the wood crossbucks with steel hoops. This miniature Decker pack saddle was made to fit a burro or donkey under 40" tall at the shoulder. The wooden bars measure 9 1/2" in length and 5 1/4" wide. The steel hoops are 3 1/4" tall and have been hand forged. These must have been specially made for someone with a small claim in a small shaft! If you collect horse equipment this little pack saddle will make a great conversation piece.
