Various Kansas GAR, EW POW, Sons of Veterans & Daughters of Veterans Badges

This is a riker case of various badges and celluloids of Grand Army of the Republic, EW-Prisoner of War, Sons of Veterans, Daughters of the Grand Army of the Republic and the Women's Relief Corps. The GAR was a veterans organization that was formed by Benjamin Stephenson on 6 April, 1866. It was composed of Union veterans of the American Civil War. In the beginning the GAR was available as a way for the veterans to meet and stay in contact with each other after the war ended. They soon grew into one of the most powerful political organizations of their time. Organizations such as the Sons of Veterans, Daughters of the GAR, Women's Relief Corps and the National Association of Ex-Prisoners of War were started as auxiliaries to the GAR as the older veterans began to die off. There are 13 different badges and celluloids, most of them pertaining to Kansas, included in this group. The celluloids are A. W. Smith Department Commander Kansas GAR, Henry C Loomis Department Commander GAR 1902 National Encampment. There is an EX-Prisoner of War medal from the 32nd National Encampment held in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1898 as well as a Ladies of the Union Ex-Prisoners of War ribbon. There is a souvenir badge and a loose medallion from the 32nd National Encampment held in Cincinnati also. A delegates badge from the 26th Annual Encampment for the Sons of Veterans held in Dodge City, Kansas in 1916 and a medallion from the 21st annual Department of the Women's Relief Corps Encampment held in Kansas are also included. A Daughters of the GAR button, past President of the Daughters of Union Veterans badge, a GAR and UCV five pointed star medallion are in the group. Rounding out the grouping is the medallion of a GAR badge. All of this comes neatly packaged in an 8 x 12 riker case, and it displays fantastic! This would make a nice Christmas or birthday gift, or the start of someone's GAR collection!
