This is an M56 helmet used by the East German military from the 1950s until the collapse of East Germany in 1990. The helmet was actually designed in 1942 as a replacement for the M35 and M40 helmets of World War II, but was never put into production. The Soviet Union required the East Germans to adopt a different helmet to replace the one used during WWII for political reasons. That's when this helmet was put into production. It underwent three different versions, this one being the third variation coming out in 1976. This one is in unissued condition. The leather liner, similar to the M31 liners used in WWII, has never been worn. The chin strap is ink stamped "MADE IN EAST GERMANY". The foam pads in still in place, as well as the draw string for the liner, still tied on the chin strap. The helmet comes with the white cover used by traffic controllers, called Regulierer. These regulators, or controllers, controlled traffic during troop movements. They were part of the traffic control units (Verkehrsregulierungszug) within armored units that ensured troop movements were safe in civilian traffic. These communist block helmets are pretty hard to come by, as they were sold off or given to many third world countries when the DDRcollapsed. This one is in like new condition, never been worn and will certainly add to any helmet collection.
