This is a 19th century half stock percussion fowling piece. The overall length is 52", with the octagonal to round barrel measuring 35 3/4" in length. The barrel and all iron hardware have the same dark patina. The barrel exterior, to include the barrel tang, has a smooth appearance with light scattered pitting, mostly around the bolster area. The bore measures 16 gauge and is dark with light scattered pitting and light surface rust. On the top flat of the barrel is a faint British proof mark, the letter E above LG above a five point star all within an oval stamp. This was from the Liege proof house and was used for black powder rifles from 1811-1892. This is the only proof mark visible on the entire fowler. There is no rear sight and doesn't look as if there ever was one. The front sight is a small iron bead approximately 1/4" from the muzzle. The lock plate has no markings at all. The action is not functional, it will not hold in half cock or full cock. The lock measures 4 3/4" in length and 1 1/8" in width. The lock plate, hammer, bolster, nipple and trigger guard have the same patina as the barrel. It's obvious this one has been together for a long time. The trigger guard is very plain, same as the lock plate. The half stock measures 27" including the butt plate. It shows the usual bumps and dings from normal handling, but is in very good condition. There are no cracks or major wood loss anywhere. There is only a small area under the bolster that shows any wood loss. An wood ramrod accompanies this fowler. It is retained to the barrel by two iron thimbles and an iron nose cap. The ramrod thimbles have been reattached to the barrel recently. This old British fowling piece wood make a great display piece hanging over the mantle of your cabin or man cave!
