This is a set of iron handcuff's from the 1800's. They are made very similar to the English Hiatt Darby style. Fully extended they are 10" wide. The ratcheting mechanisms work on each cuff. These are operated by a key inserted into the lock tube, then tightening the key until the ratchet is released. The cuffs were then placed on the subjects wrists and the key was then unscrewed to lock the ratchet in place. Not only did you have to contend with this once, but for both wrists. Not so much fun when your subject is resisting. This shortcoming led to the adjustable ratcheting mechanism invented by W.V. Adams in 1862. Both rings that join the cuffs to the pivot between them have been cut and brazed back together. There are no stamps or markings on the cuffs or the key. The cuffs and key have a dark, aged patina. If you have a Provost Martials display these would look great in it, or a Wild West collection!
