This is a US Model 1860 Officer's Light Cavalry saber manufactured by the Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts. This particular sword has an overall length of 40 1/2", with a blade length of 34 3/4". The blade is 1 1/16" wide at the ricasso, and the flat spine is 5/16" wide at the hilt. The blade has a wide fuller that extends 27 5/8" from the ricasso. There are no makers marks or stamps on either ricasso, but it is definitely an Ames product. The blade is etched and still has quite a bit of shine to it, with minimal age freckling on both sides of the blade. The obverse side of the blade is etched with the usual floral and military items, along with an eagle and banner with the words E PLURIBUS ENUM on it. The reverse side of the blade is etched with the same floral and military items, and the letters US. There are several nicks along the edge of the blade, felt not seen. The leather throat washer is missing. The brass hilt has a beautiful golden patina, retaining some of the original gold wash. The two branch guard is hand chased on the outer branches. The guard has a very ornate floral design engraved on the inside, along with the very recognizable Ames spread winged eagle. The knucklebow has a floral design engraved on each side where it joins the pommel cap. The pommel cap is engraved with laurel branches. The grip still retains the sharkskin cover, which is in amazing condition considering the age. The twisted brass wire wrap is still tight on the grip. The original scabbard accompanies this gorgeous sword. The scabbard has a couple of small spots where the seam is spread, between the lower mount and the drag. It exhibits a steel gray patina with a small area of pitting on the back side between the throat and top mount. The brass mounts and suspension rings are tight to the scabbard and show some honest wear! The brass throat and outer side of the mounts are elaborately engraved. The brass drag is secure to the scabbard body, as shows wear from use as well. This sword was probably manufactured for Schuler, Hartley & Graham, Horstmann or another retailer that did not make their own swords. If you thing is Civil War Cavalry, then this one deserves a spot on your wall!
