This is a powder flask made from a cow horn from the 1800's. The horn measures 7" in length, 3" across the butte plug and 1/4" across the spout. The horn has aged nicely and shows no cracks or splits. There is a small bit of insect damage, and some chipping on and around the butte plug. The butte plug is held secure with brass pins. A small eyelet is still secure to the plug, but the suspension strap is long gone. The spout plug is also missing. The size of this one makes me think this one was used as a primer for rifles and pistols. There are no designs carved into the horn, but a gold band approximately 1/2" wide has been painted around the large end of the horn. This one came into the shop from the local Southwest Virginia area.
