This is a Revolutionary war period wooden canteen, also referred to as a "rundlet, rum keg, rumlet or swigler". These type canteens were popular from the 1750' through the 1850's. This one is constructed of a single piece of turned wood. It has been incised to simulate individual staves. End caps have been added to complete the rumlet. It measures 4" in length and 3" across the end caps. This little personal "kegger" has aged well and the wood finish is fantastic. I don't believe the cork is original, but is does have some age to it. Examples of this type canteen can be found in Neumann and Kravic's book "Collector's Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution" pages 61 - 64. This is a very iconic relic of the colonial period and would look great in your war room.
