This is an 1870's - 1920's cast steel meat cleaver. The cleaver has an overall length of 12 3/4", with a blade length of 7 1/4". The cast steel blade has a tapered design that narrows to a moderately sharp edge. The hidden tang is exposed at the very end of the handle and has a single brass ferrule at the front of the handle. The turned wooden handle is in very good condition, with just a couple of shallow age cracks. The left side of the blade is stamped in four lines. The top line is WARRANTED in an arc above H.K & S/L/STEEL. The cleaver was designed to be able to cut through thick pieces of meat, cartilage, sinew and bone in part due to the weight of the cleaver and the amount of force used by the person cutting the meat. A small in the end of the cleaver allows it to be hung up when not in use. This cleaver remains in very good condition, and would go great with any late 1800's to early 1900's western camp theme.
