This is a European import single shot pistol most likely made in Germany or Austria. The overall length of this weapon is 15 1/4", with the barrel measuring 8 3/4". The .72 caliber smooth bore is dark but is not rusted or severely pitted. There are no proof marks on the round barrel. The lock plate shows no makers mark, just a single recessed O towards the front of the lock. The hammer locks in both positions and drops hard when the trigger is depressed. The barrel, lock plate, trigger and guard and all the other iron hardware have a dark steel gray patina with scattered dark spots. It's obvious this gun has been together for a long time. The stock has a couple of nicks, mostly around the grip. There are a couple of visible stamps on the left stock flat, but I am not able to make them out. A small, non captive iron ramrod came with the gun. The only other visible stamp on the entire pistol is an H stamped on the trigger assembly. Pulling the barrel and lock found the number 11 stamped into the bottom of the barrel, and three straight lines chisel marks. The same lines were found under the side plate stamped in the stock. These rifle caliber "horse" pistols, converted to percussion, saw service in the early days of the Civil War.
