This is a Model 1851 Colt Navy cap and ball revolver. The serial number 169607 puts this one in the production year of 1863. The 7 1/2" barrel has visible rifling and a bore that shows no rust or pitting. The single line ADDRESS COL. SAMl COLT NEW YORK U. S. address is pretty worn with some letters missing, but visible. The Colt patent mark is still very crisp and legible. The is no cylinder scene left on this old gun, but the serial number is still visible. The sub inspectors stamps of B and P are found on the trigger guard, along with the letter P on the frame, barrel and back strap. The serial numbers are visible and match, with the exception of the wedge and loading lever. The wedge is stamped 22268 and the loading lever is stamped 0708. The gun has an overall dull steel gray patina. The mechanics of this old Colt work perfectly. There are no traces of the original silver wash visible on the trigger guard and back strap. The exposed brass has taken on a medium golden patina that is very eye pleasing. The walnut grips have the majority of the original varnish remaining, with a couple of small bumps and dings on the sides of the grips. They fit the gun like a glove, have no cartouche, carved initials on the right grip and have no repairs. This old cap and ball gun may have fought with some Confederate soldier during the war of northern aggression. Regardless of which side it was carried by, the gun still displays well and will make a nice addition to your Colt or Civil War firearms collection.
