This is a Model 1858 "Bullseye" canteen from the Civil War. This canteen has five concentric rings stamped into each side of the canteen body. These were done in an attempt to help strengthen the canteen. It measures approximately 7 1/2" in diameter. There are no dents anywhere on the canteen, but there is a small pin hole located on the third ring. All three sling guides are reporting for duty, but the stopper, pull and chain are missing in action. The pewter spout stands straight and is marked R.H. Gratz & Co. PHILA. This manufacturer had contracts for 90,283 in August & September of 1862 and July of 1863. The surface of the canteen shows no traces of the original bright color, now having a dark gray patina. There are a few spots of light surface rust scattered around. This maker marked canteen still displays well, and will look great in your collection!
