This is a Model 1858 "Bullseye" canteen from the Civil War. This canteen has five concentric rings stamped into each side of the canteen body. These were done in an attempt to help strengthen the canteen. It measures approximately 7 1/2" in diameter. There is a very small dent on one side of the canteen, located on the fourth ring. Believe it or not this thing still holds water! All three sling guides are reporting for duty, as well as the stopper and pull. The original chain has been replaced with a piece of period string. The pewter spout stands straight and is marked HADDEN PORTER & BOOTH PHILa. This manufacturer had contracts for thousands of canteens from 1862 to 1864. The surface of the canteen shows traces of the original bright color showing, mainly in the recessed areas of the rings. There are a few spots of light surface rust scattered around. The web sling is period correct for this canteen. Here's a chance to pick up a piece that every collection needs, maker marked and still capable of doing it's job!
